Event highlights the women designing the new KC Current stadium

Several International Women’s Day celebrations are happening in Kansas City Wednesday. One group in Overland Park, Kansas, is recognizing what the city’s professional women’s soccer team, the KC Current, is doing for women. “People will be able to see a little piece of me everywhere they go within the stadium,” Generator Studio Director of Interior Design Christina Franklin said. Franklin is not only excited to watch the new KC Current stadium being built, but she’s also right in the middle of it.”I’m overseeing the design of all the interiors,” Franklin said.It’s a similar story for project manager Katelyn Depenning with Henderson Engineers.”It’s busy. It’s fast,” Depenning said of the stadium’s construction.It’s exciting work and a chance to advance women in the construction industry.“It’s a great way to sprinkle in some extra women part of an engineering world that’s art a normal thing in our day-to-day,” Depenning said.Franklin and Depenning are just two of more than 200 Kansas City area women at the On The Rise event in Overland Park.”Bring together emerging females in the architecture, engineering and construction space,” Event founder Erica Jones said. It’s the third year of the event, which aims to highlight women in architecture.“It was very intentional for the KC Current to have female lead teams and female-owned businesses, and what’s that done for our females in Kansas City has been amazing,” Jones said. The group says the new KC Current Stadium will be more than just a symbol of a great team and a great franchise. They say it will also be a great example of a great collaboration.”We have males who are fantastic allies for us and really wanting to bring in more females into the architecture, engineering and construction world,” Jones said. More than 200 area businessmen and women attended today’s event.
