Welcome to Day 3 of the Olympic Games Paris 2024!

Wang and Sun hold off Ri and Kim to win mixed doubles table tennis gold

Wow, this mixed doubles final has been a close one. Top seeds and singles world number one players Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha of People’s Republic of China have not had it all their own way.

The lowest-ranked team in the competition, Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, are their opponents – and are impressively sticking with Wang and Sun.

The two teams split the opening two games, Wang and Sun take the next two, then Ri and Kim win Game 5 to narrow the gap.

Wang and Sun bring up two gold medal points at 10-8 in the sixth. And when Ri sends a return long off the table, Wang and Sun can celebrate!

It’s almost relief for them as they turn to each other and pump fists. China have won mixed doubles gold after missing out on this title in Tokyo at its debut appearance – the only table tennis event the powerhouse had not won, until now.

Earlier, Republic of Korea won bronze.
