TCE: In your view, what are some of the most pressing cybersecurity threats and challenges facing the BFSI sector today?
Kavitha: Banking and financial institutions are integral to our daily lives, managing vast amounts of confidential customer information. Consequently, they are obligated to comply with stringent regulations to uphold security and transparency standards.
As technology evolves and customer expectations shift, financial organizations must adapt to stay data-driven and compliant. Regulatory compliance remains paramount for both small and large banks, necessitating vigilance amidst the ever-changing global regulatory landscape. Investing in a robust security culture, leveraging the latest technologies, and automating processes are essential steps to ensure ongoing compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
The BFSI industry has become a prime target for malicious cybercriminals, leading to significant investments in cybersecurity and data protection. According to a research report by the New York Federal Reserve, financial firms experience 300 times more cyberattacks than firms in other industries.
Cybercriminals often target financial institutions for large ransoms, exploiting vulnerabilities in their systems. Ransomware attacks, in particular, pose a significant threat to the banking industry, as they can disrupt operations and compromise sensitive customer data. These attacks aim to incapacitate businesses by encrypting data or rendering systems unusable until a ransom is paid.
