Global Policy Centre for Governance at HLPF 2024

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2024) is currently taking place from 8 July to 17 July at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”, the HLPF 2024 will review the following Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 1 (End Poverty) SDG 2 (End Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peaceful and Inclusive Societies) and SDG 17 (Partnerships).

During the HLPF 2024, the UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance will launch four new research and analytical reports focussed on SDG 16 for Peaceful and Inclusive Societies: 

UN Global Progress Report on SDG 16 Indicators – At the Crossroads: Breakdown or Breakthrough for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. 

The joint report produced by UNDP, UNODC and OHCHR, with contributions from UNICEF, WB, UNODA, UNCTAD, WHO and the IPU will present the latest data and analysis across the 24 indicators under Goal 16. 

Connections that Matter: How the Quality of Governance Boosts Climate Action   

Building on the SDG 16 interlinkages series, this new report compiled by UNDP’s Global Policy Centre for Governance and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) illustrates the critical connections between two goals under review at HLPF – SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 16 (peace, justice, inclusion). 

2023 Voluntary National Reviews though the Lens of Peaceful, Just and Strong Institutions   

An analytical report on the integration and coverage of SDG 16 in member states’ 2023 VNRs.  

 ✅ Making Progress on SDG 16: Unlocking the Power of Example  

This publication showcases the policies, activities, and initiatives of 16 countries contributing to Goal 16, including the best practices of UNDP support in promoting SDG 16. 

The Director of UNDP’s Global Policy Centre for Governance, Arvinn Gadgil, will lead a delegation to participate in meetings and side-events at the HLPF 2024 in New York, including: 

✅ The Official Launch of the Joint UN Global Progress Report on SDG 16 Indicators 

The event will be co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Romania, Sierra Leone and Norway to the UN. It will include a video presentation from the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed and a panel discussion including senior officials from UNDP, UNODC and OHCHR. The event will also be live streamed on this UNDP GPCG website.

✅ Parliamentary Forum at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 

This year’s Parliamentary Forum will focus on two SDGs that are under review at the HLPF, namely, SDG 16, on peace, justice and strong institutions, and SDG 13, on climate action. The UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance will share findings, insights and policy implications from a new study on the interlinkages between SDG 16 and SDG 13 and how the quality of governance boosts climate adaption and mitigation efforts
