Indira Gandhi: first female Prime Minister of India
Indira Gandhi was central figure of the Indian National Congress. She was Indian politician.
Up to now, she was the first & only Female Prime Minister of India. She was born on 19th November 1917 in to a Kashmiri Pandit family in Allahabad.
Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru were her parents. Jawaharlal Nehru was the central figure in Indian politics, Indian independence activist and the first Prime Minister of India.
She served as the Prime Minister of India from January 1966 to March 1977 & again from January 1980 to her assassination in October 1984.
She was the second largest-serving Indian Prime Minister after her father.
During 1947-1964, during Nehru’s time as Prime Minister she was considered as a key assistant of him.
She accompanied him on his foreign trips. In 1959, she was elected as the president of Indian National Congress.
After the death of Nehru, she was appointed as a member of Rajya Sabha in 1964. She became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s cabinet as the Minister of Information & Broadcasting.
In the congress’s parliamentary election in 1966, she defeated Morarji Desai to become leader & made Shastri Prime Minister of India.
As a PM, she was known for her political intransigency & unprecedented centralisation of power.
She went to war with Pakistan and it resulted in Indian victory and the creation of Bangladesh.
It increased influence of India to the point where it became the sole regional power of South Asia.
She instituted a state of emergency from 1975 to 1977. During that time, basic civil liberties were suspended and the press was censored. She returned to power after election in 1980.
She ordered military operation in Golden temple on the name of operation Blue Star. Because of that, her own bodyguards and Sikh nationalists assassinated her on 31 October 1984.
She was named “Woman of the Millennium” in an online pole organised by BBC in 1999.
Pratibha Patil: first female president of India
Pratibha Patil is an Indian politician. During 2007 to 2012, she served as the 12th President of India.
She is the only woman to hold the office as a member of Indian National Congress. Early during 2004 to 2007, she served as the Governor of Rajasthan.
In 2019, she was felicitated with Mexico’s highest civilian award Order of the Aztec Eagle. She was born on 19th December 1934 in the village of Nadgaon, Maharashtra.
She received her master’s degree in political science & Economics from Jalgaon and Bachelor of Law degree from Bombay. She worked as a Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha during 1986 to 1988.
Kalpana Chawla who touched the Sky
Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She was an engineer, American astronaut.
In 1997, she first flew on a space shuttle Columbia as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator.
She was born on 17th March 1962 in Karnal Punjab. She was one of the seven-crew members died in space shuttle Columbia in 2003.
It disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honour. Several streets, institutions and universities have named in her honour. Chawla is regarded as a national hero in India.
Kiran Bedi: first female Indian Police Service officer
Kiran Bedi is a retired IPS officer, former tennis player, social activist & politician. She is the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry currently.
She started her service in 1975. She is first female IPS officer. Kiran did service for 35 years. In 2007, she took voluntary retirement as Director General of Police, Bureau of Police Research and Development.
She was born on 9th June 1949 in Amritsar, Punjab.
In 1966, as a teenager, she became national junior tennis champion. She won several titles at national and state level championship during 1965 to 1978.
After joining IPS, she served in Delhi, Mizoram, Goa and Chandigarh. She started her career as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.
She won the President’s Police Medal in 1979. She brought a reduction in crime against women in West Delhi.
As a DCP North Delhi, she launched campaign against drug abuse. She was posted to Delhi Prisons as IG in 1993.
She introduced several reforms at Tihar Jail. In 1994, she won her Ramon Magsaysay Award.
She became the first Indian woman to become a Police Advisor to Secretary-General of United Nations in 2003. In 2007, she resigned, and focuses on writing & social activities. She has written several books.
During 2008-11, she hosted a court show Aap Ki Kacheri. She was one of the key leaders of 2011 Indian snit-corruption movement.
She joined the BJP in January 2015. Bedi contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly election as the CM candidate of party but could not succeed.
She was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry on 22nd May 2016.
Mother Teresa: founder of the Missionaries of Charity
Mother Teresa was a catholic nun and saint of Calcutta. She was honoured in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
She was born on 26th August 1910 in Skopje-n0w the capital of North Macedonia.
After living in Skopje for 8-years, Teresa moved to Ireland and then India. In India, she lived for most of her life.
In 1950, she founded the missionaries of charity. That was a Roman religious congregation; they had more than 4,500 nuns in more than 133 countries.
They manage homes for people dying of leprosy, tuberculosis & HIV/AIDS.
They also runs orphanages, schools, mobile clinics, children and family counselling programs, soup kitchens etc.
She received a number of honours like in 1962 she received Ramon Magsaysay Peace Price and in 1979 Noble Peace Price.
She was canonised on 4th September 2016. 5th September- her death anniversary day is her feast day. Navin Chawla wrote her authorized biography. It was published in 1992.
Indra Nooyi: most influential woman entrepreneur of India
Indra Nooyi is an Indian American business executive. She is former chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) of PepsiCo. She was born on 28th October 1955 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu India.
She was ranked at number 13 on the Forbes list of The World’s 100 most powerful women in 2014. In Fortune list in 2015, she was ranked the 2nd most powerful women.
In addition, in 2017, she was ranked the 2nd most powerful again on the Forbes list of the 19 most powerful women in India. She serves on International Cricket Council and on the boards of Amazon.
Anjali Gupta: first female officer in India
Flying Officer Anjali Gupta was an Indian Air Force officer who served in Air Force from 2001 to 2006.
She was the first female officer in India and in the Air Force. Anjali was working at the Aircraft Systems & Testing Establishment in Bangalore.
She was born on 12th May 1970 in Delhi. She joined IAF through Short Service Commission officer in Education branch.
In 2001, she was first posted at Belgaum, Karnataka. She filed a case of sexual harassment against three of her seniors at a police station in February 2005. She was found hanged at a relative’s home in Bhopal on 11th September 2011.
