India pushes women empowerment & gender equality through new global alliance to meet G20 commitments

India has taken its women empowerment agenda up a notch by giving it a global footprint. On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2024 at Davos, it has established the “Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality,” a global alliance that will work to build on the commitments of the G20 leaders in areas of women empowerment and gender equality. It aims to do this in a manner that will reach and benefit the larger global community.

The alliance aims to bring together global good practices, knowledge sharing, and investments in the field of women’s health, education, and enterprise. The alliance will follow up on the activities of the Engagement Group and initiatives under the G20 framework, including the Business 20, Women 20, and G20 EMPOWER.

Zydus Life signs exclusive licensing and supply agreement for breast cancer drug

Zydus Lifesciences Ltd. has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, has entered into an exclusive licensing and supply agreement with Synthon for Palbociclib Tablets for the US market, it said in an exchange filing.

Since Synthon was the first sole Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) applicant for the Palbociclib Tablets 75 mg, 100 mg, and 125 mg, with a paragraph IV certification, it will therefore, may be eligible for 180 days of generic drug exclusivity for all three strengths.

President of Cognizant Americas expects a cautious market for three more quarters

The President of Cognizant Americas, Surya Gummadi said that the cautious approach in the market is likely to continue for three more quarters. He added that discretionary spend in the market is still under pressure and spend is still congested in the market.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18’s Managing Editor Shereen Bhan on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum at Davos, Gummadi said, “The clients in the financial services sector are still very cautious. The manufacturing sector is opening up a little–we see clients beginning to spend in that sector. The consumer is still a little compressed. The demand is coming back in life sciences a bit relatively.”

BMW partners with robotics startup Figure to take on Tesla’s robot

Robotics startup Figure said it has signed a partnership with BMW Manufacturing to deploy its humanoid robots in the car maker’s facility in the U.S., as more companies turn to human-like robots to take on certain physical tasks.

This marks the first commercial deal Figure has signed since it was founded in 2022. While the company didn’t disclose how many robots BMW will be using, the partnership will start with small quantities and expand if performance targets have been met, according to Brett Adcock, chief executive at Figure.

Top tech CEOs respond differently to the “poaching war” with Cognizant

Wipro and Infosys have seen a slew of exits by top executives, many of whom have joined rival Cognizant. Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar has reportedly hired nearly 20 senior leaders from his previous employer Infosys and Wipro.

Wipro lost 10 top executives, including chief financial officer Jatin Dalal and senior vice president Mohammad Haque, to Cognizant. The software giant founded by Azim Premji has now filed a suit against Cognizant to stop the alleged poaching in the future.

Akasa’s 150 aircraft order — why it’s a sign of intensifying competition and immense market potential in Indian skies

India’s youngest airline Akasa Air announced a widely anticipated order with Boeing for 150 737Max Aircraft at the WINGS Airshow. The order comprises the 737 MAX 10 and 737 MAX 8-200 with deliveries through 2032. This is in addition of the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-promoted airline’s existing order of 76 aircraft of which 22 aircraft have already been inducted and deployed.

With Akasa’s latest order, India’s airlines collectively have more than a 1000 aircraft to be inducted by the end of the decade and it is hoped that competition in the skies will intensify giving consumers additional options and help stakeholders with balancing risk.

Indian govt urges unicorns to provide at least 30 minutes of mentorship per month to startups

The Indian government has urged unicorns across India to provide at least 30 minutes of mentorship to budding startups via the government-backed MAARG Portal. Chairing a meeting with founders and representatives of unicorns, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal exhorted them to voluntarily mentor the startup ecosystem to make it more robust and help achieve India’s target of becoming the largest host country for startup unicorns.

Attended by representatives from over 40 startups and unicorns including Car Dekho, EasyMyTrip, Zerodha, Lenskart and Boat, the meeting witnessed the companies pitch for a better funding mechanism and lower rates of interest to increase their growth prospects.

Average number of years to become a unicorn falls from 8.4 years in 2022 to 5.5 years in 2023

Early-stage venture capital fund, Orios Venture Partners, on Wednesday, January 17, announced the release of its Indian Tech Unicorn and Exits Report 2023. The report brought forth the decline in the average number of years required for a startup to become a unicorn. From taking 8.4 years in 2022, to now taking only 5.5 years in 2023 shows the abundant support available in form of mentorship and capital for the founders.

India witnessed a total of only two unicorns in 2023 but continues to be the third largest nation with most number of unicorns.
