Women’s Foundation opens applications for 2024 Policy Institute Fellowship

The Women’s Foundation of Alabama, a pioneering organization with a 27-year legacy dedicated to the unique needs of women and girls, has announced that it is now accepting applications for its 2024 Women’s Policy Institute (WPI) fellowship program.

The institute, which began in 2021, offers an experiential learning opportunity geared towards fostering community leaders adept in public policy advocacy. The 40-hour curriculum centers around principles of gender and racial equity, providing comprehensive training in areas such as legislative strategy, issue research, advocacy campaign planning, and community organizing.

Kate Messervy, Women’s Foundation of Alabama’s Director of Advocacy and Engagement, stressed the significance of the fellowship: “The Women’s Policy Institute Fellowship empowers community leaders to become catalysts for systemic change in Alabama. At this pivotal moment, amplifying the voices of all women and nurturing leadership that strengthens our communities and economies is paramount.”

Historically, the foundation holds the unique position of being the sole philanthropic body in Alabama singularly focused on women and girls, funded entirely by community contributions. Their strategies encompass philanthropy, research, and public policy advocacy, making strides in recent years to bolster economic opportunities for women across the state.

WPI was conceptualized in light of the noticeable scarcity of female leadership in public sectors, intending to close the chasm between Alabama’s legislature and its diverse populace.

Graduates of the WPI program, or Fellows, stand to gain more than just knowledge. They will connect with a broad network of women and vital stakeholders across Alabama, increasing their civic engagement, spearheading grassroots movements, and emerging as influential changemakers for the state.

The achievements of former WPI Fellows are commendable. They have successfully hindered bills that would negatively affect childcare safety, championed pay equity, and secured funding for innovative projects such as home-based childcare accelerators.
