Women in power in 2023: New data shows progress but wide regional gaps
About UN Women
UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
Promoting and protecting women’s political rights is one of UN Women’s primary work areas. UN Women supports achieving women’s equal political rights through several key initiatives. Among these are the support for achieving 50/50 gender parity in decision-making at all levels.
The UN Gender Quota Portal, supported by UN Women, features information on electoral gender quotas for single or lower houses of parliaments around the world, including on type of quotas in force, electoral systems, and quota targets. The Portal also supports analysis and comparison of legal provisions on legislated gender quotas.
UN Women also monitors progress towards gender equality through data collection and dissemination on women’s representation in local government (SDG indicator 5.5.1b). More information, including global data on locally elected women worldwide, is available on the Women and Local Government Knowledge Hub.
