He says the dramatic move towards remote work isn’t just a fad. It enhances flexibility, allowing employees to balance both personal and professional commitments effectively. At the same time, he says, it allows organisations the opportunity to access a worldwide talent pool, which further encourages team diversity and creativity.
In addition, working remotely lowers overhead expenses for companies, promotes sustainability by reducing commuting and, most importantly, boosts output because of fewer disruptions. Plus, when individuals learn to thrive despite geographical constraints, it leads to an adaptive and robust workforce, he explains.

To overcome this, he advises remote individuals to be creative and strategic in networking with stakeholders within and outside the organisation.
By utilising online networks like LinkedIn, Nigam says, professionals can participate in webinars, workshops and virtual networking events, and establish connections with like-minded people worldwide. This makes it easier to amplify professional visibility and see opportunities for growth.
Skills and competencies that remote workers should prioritise acquiring
Not only the work environment, but the skill requirement also differs when an individual operates from a remote setup. As a result, they have to prioritise acquiring and honing specific skills to experience career advancement.
Familiarity with remote communication techniques and technologies for effective cooperation; self-discipline and time management for meeting deadlines; flexibility and problem-solving to handle a variety of obstacles; and excellent project management and organisation skills to demonstrate leadership potential are some of the crucial skills that individuals must acquire to grow in continuously evolving remote landscape, according to Nigam.
Barriers to remote work and strategies to overcome them
He says employees may face obstacles like diminished visibility and recognition as a result of their physical separation from management and coworkers. Along with this, gaining access to possibilities for career advancement, which are often found in office settings, becomes quite challenging. Over a period of time, he says, the distance can also make individuals feel disconnected from the company and their peers.
On ways to smoothly move past these obstacles, he suggests remaining proactive in communicating with managers to guarantee exposure and acknowledgment, actively searching for career development programmes that are accommodating to remote workers, and participating in virtual networking to form relationships within the company. Nigam says he is aware of an individual named Rahul who works as a sales manager but managed to achieve remarkable success while working remotely. Despite geographical barriers, he says, the person leveraged digital platforms for seamless collaboration with clients and colleagues. Along with actively engaging in online industry forums, he sought mentorship from seasoned professionals and often attended virtual sales summits to enhance his skills.

His dedication, combined with the ability to leverage technology, enabled him to excel in his career while enjoying the flexibility of remote work, adds Nigam.
Sure, remote work comes with some limitations. But it in no way prevents an individual from climbing the success ladder and experiencing career growth. A remote worker has to just understand and develop the ways to make the best use of the setup and the flexibility that accompanies it.
