Ponte Vedra Beach: Women’s food alliance launched

Ponte Vedra Beach foodies Christine Hoffman, Jennifer Easterling, Leigh Cort and Helga Tan were among the two dozen females in the culinary and hospitality industry who met Sept. 10 at Jacksonville Beach’s historic Casa Marina Hotel to launch the new Women’s Food Alliance (WFA). Hoffman is catering sales manager at the TPC Sawgrass, Easterling is the publisher of Beaches and San Marco Magazine. Cort is a travel and food writer and publicist and Helga Tan Fellows is the CFO (Chief Farming Officer) of Gyo Greens, a hydroponic and aquaculture farm in Ponte Vedra Beach (www.cyogreens.com).
The Martini Membership Gala was hosted by WFA Founder Leigh Cort who invited each of the new members to the podium to introduce themselves.
She introduced the FWA advisory committee and announced several upcoming members only events, including a Bon Appetite Italiano dinner at Amici in St. Augustine Beach, where FWA member Benedetta Dubetz will share her family story. Her brother, Vito Arena, will share some artichoke secrets and members will enjoy a three-course dinner with wine.

Live well. Learn forever. That’s the motto for OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), the 55-and-older program through the University of North Florida’s Division of Continuing Education. Taught entirely by volunteer instructors, OLLI offers an incredibly diverse array of subjects for nearly every interest. Some of the new classes this year include: Acting for Fun with the Vintage Players, A Brief Excursion into Norse Mythology, A History of Valor – African-American Military Units, Facial Fitness – Exercises for the Face and Neck, Florida Friendly Landscaping and more.
Charlene Vincent of St. Augustine will be teaching a new class called Writing Your Spiritual Autobiography.
At the OLLI Fall Showcase, Vincent discussed her new course enthusiastically with OLLI volunteers Nancy Triana and Judy Jameson of Ponte Vedra Beach. Vincent holds an advanced master’s degree in theology from Boston University and a master’s in theological studies from Episcopal Divinity School. She has written two theses, “Giving Voice to Spirituality Through Narrative” and “Pilgrimage and Divinity.”

Sept. 24 is the big day. It is the annual Beth El, The Beaches Synagogue Game Day. Games begin at 10:30 a.m. at 288 N. Roscoe Road, Ponte Vedra Beach (across from Lulu’s Restaurant).
There will be a catered lunch, snacks, door prizes and more for your $25 minimum donation.
Gather your friends and create a table of mah jongg, bridge, board games, card games, etc. The annual event is sponsored by the Beth El Sisterhood and all funds raised will be donated to charity.
