Jenks Park Residence to offer transitional housing, educational opportunities for at risk women in Central Falls
CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) — Transitional housing programs, workforce development and educational opportunities will be available through the new Jenks Parks Residence in Central Falls.
Medical and mental health care will also be provided.
This 30-unit affordable living space will support mothers and children who are at risk of homelessness, providing rent-stabilized, fully-furnished apartments with all utilities included for two years.
This facility is first of its kind in Rhode Island, providing a primary care medical clinic while also addressing housing in the community.
“I’ve seen firsthand the dire need women and children in our city have for safe, stable, supportive housing, and I couldn’t be prouder of this historic moment and partnership with Dr. Nelken to bring this groundbreaking housing project to life,” said Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera.
There are an estimated 1,800 people experiencing homelessness in Rhode Island, with 70 children reported homeless in the 2021-22 school year and more than ten percent living in extreme poverty.
“Our goal is to give women and children a safe space, where they can receive the support and resources they need to take care of themselves and their families,” said Dr. Beata Nelken, founder of Central Falls Children’s Foundation and Jenks Park Pediatrics.
The 10,000 square foot facility will repurpose a former assisted living facility with a community kitchen with daily evening meals, a play area for children, a library and a computer lab for workforce development.
The space is funded by a $1 million site acquisition investment from RIHousing in collaboration with the City of Central Falls, Central Falls Children’s Foundation and the Papitto Opportunity Connection.
