Expert Shares Tips To Maintain Vaginal Health

Vaginal health is a critical aspect of a woman’s overall well-being, and Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a holistic approach to maintaining its delicate balance. A study published in the Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Infectious Diseases (IPID), ‘The human vagina is inhabited by a range of microbes from a pool of over 50 species. The microbiota can change composition rapidly, for reasons that are not fully clear. This can lead to infection.’

To understand ayurvedic methods that can help to balance this microbial composition of vagina, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who said, “Ayurveda focuses on harmony between the body, mind, and spirit, and it provides natural remedies to support women’s vaginal health.”

Diet and Nutrition

Dr Chaudhary commented, “As per Ayurveda, a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins is essential for vaginal health.”

“Staying hydrated is crucial for vaginal health as well. So drink ample water to keep vaginal tissues well-hydrated and prevent dryness and discomfort,” he added.

He also underscored the importance of probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt, kefir, and fermented foods for maintaining the balance of beneficial bacteria in the vagina. His recommendation is supported by the findings of the IPID study which concluded, ‘The vaginal health of many women can be improved by probiotic intervention.’

Personal Hygiene

Women are well aware of the role that hygiene plays in maintaining vaginal health. To optimise hygienic practices that can improve vaginal health, Dr Chaudhary listed:

  • Avoid harsh soaps and cleansers in the genital area. Ayurveda suggests using mild, natural cleansers or even plain water to maintain cleanliness.
  • Douching disrupts the natural pH balance of the vagina. Ayurveda advises against this practice.

Herbal Remedies

Now coming to the aspect that is considered synonyms with Ayurveda, there are a bunch of herbal remedies that can help you protect your vaginal health. Dr Chaudhary listed:

  • Neem: Neem has powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help you prevent infection.
  • Triphala: Triphala is a blend of three Ayurvedic herbs (Amla, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki) known for their cleansing properties. You can use Triphala to wash the genital area.
  • Shatavari: Shatavari is a popular Ayurvedic herb for women’s health. It can help regulate hormones, promote vaginal lubrication, and alleviate discomfort during menopause.

Yoga and Exercise

Talking about physical activities that can enhance vaginal health, Dr Chaudhary shared, “Yoga poses like the Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana) and the Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) can enhance blood circulation to the pelvic area and help maintain vaginal health.”

“Kegel exercises, or flexing the vaginal muscles, can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, promoting better bladder control and vaginal muscle tone,” he concluded.

However, before you embark on an Ayurvedic journey to achieve perfect vaginal health, remember that individual needs may vary, so consulting with a healthcare professional, especially one well-versed in Ayurveda, is recommended for personalised advice. If you’re experiencing specific vaginal health concerns, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider, in addition to an Ayurveda practitioner. They can provide personalized guidance and recommend herbal formulations tailored to your needs.
