Celebrate women in the arts at Root Music Project’s showcase

Colorado is home to some exceptional female artists — from musicians, to dancers, painters, sculptors, writers, actors, food stylists, woodworkers, topiarists, and everything in between.

Despite the plethora of talent, women in Colorado have historically been, and continue to be, underrepresented in the art industry, facing challenges in gaining visibility, market opportunities, and leadership roles, not to mention a pay gap between genders. The folks at Roots Music Project want to counteract that with AMPlify, a night of centering and honoring local women in music and the arts.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, audiences can catch four talented singer/songwriters – accompanied by one artist-slash-dancer extraordinaire – onstage for an evening of feminine fabulousity.

Kicking off the event is Anna Cutler, a Boulder singer-songwriter and keyboardist, who is known for her engaging storytelling and charismatic stage presence. She’ll be followed by Monica LaBonte, a seasoned folk and country music artist, who specializes in playing introspective and heartfelt tunes. Also taking the stage is poetic Olivia Roumel, whose soulful and vocally driven sound is inspired by her deep connection to nature.

Closing down the evening at 9 p.m. is the Ingrid Avison band. Avison is a singer-songwriter with a penchant for crafting compelling stories and cinematic soundscapes, and who frequently brings crowds to their feet with emotional content and raw vocal style.

Audiences can also look forward to seeing dancer Jessica Ivy, who will dance on pole throughout Avison’s set. Ivy is a mixed-media artist and art therapist, who also moonlights as a pole dance instructor. Sometimes, she even combines the two – twirling upside down on a pole, charcoal in hand, creating intuitive, flowy marks on a piece of paper taped to the floor. Ivy’s artwork will be available to view (and to purchase) at the event.
