Lifelong learning classes are affordable and rich in content

If you are hungry to learn something new in the new year, a smorgasbord of affordable adult classes on various topics starts in January.
Here are some of the offerings:
University School evening classes
University School of Nashville’s evening class catalog is online at www.eveningclasses.org.
This program has grown to include more than 160 classes in 10 categories, including music, literature, culture and politics; family, health and wellness; arts and hobbies; home and garden; career finance and technology; cooking, and wine and spirits.
This annual night class series offers about 160 classes, including Nashville’s Amazing Architecture, Urban Beekeeping, Adult Improv, Circlesong, Selecting the Right Contractor, Home Lawn Renovation, Tech Knowledge for Boomers, Belle Meade Mansion Tour and Wine Tasting.
There are also a lot of cooking classes, with restaurants including Lyra, Etch, Lockeland Table, Husk, Hathorne, Chaatable, Biscuit Love and O-ku offering classes.
Class prices range from $27 to $100. All proceeds benefit USN’s K-12 need-based scholarship endowment.
The winter courses are taught by Nashville professionals, entrepreneurs and restaurateurs as well as USN faculty and staff, all of whom volunteer their time.

Vanderbilt Osher classes
Vanderbilt’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, open to those 50 and older, has some unique offerings, including Understanding Brain Disorders, Six American Novels, U.S. History from a Women’s Perspective, How to Write a Memoir, John Bell Hood’s Tennessee Campaign Civil War class, a series of Fort Negley sessions, a class to accompany the Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s winter production of “Macbeth” and an “OLLI at Oz Arts” class on the upcoming “Notes of a Native Son” production.
Most classes are $60 for the six-week series, and scholarships are available.

Lipscomb’s Lifelong Learning
Lipscomb’s classes for adults run Feb. 10 through March 13 (Session I) and March 27 through May 1 (Session 2), with choices including American Authors, Cooking and Southern Hospitality, Astronomy, the History of Baseball, Current Events, Calligraphy for Beginners and Women of the Old Testament.
The cost is $80 per person for each class or $120 to enroll in two or more classes in the same session.
The Lipscomb program also includes some “Lunch and Learn” sessions, with topics including the Vietnam Voices oral history project, the History of the Lotz House and the History of Lipscomb homes including Avalon.

Nashville Community Education
The Nashville Community Education spring class registration is open with 190 classes in seven locations, beginning Jan. 21.
Classes, including over 20 free classes and more than 50 that are $10 to $35, include ceramics, quilting, grant writing, Understanding Medicare, Qigong, yoga, financial management, couponing, cooking, journaling, gardening, homebuying and drone piloting. Classes will be offered at the Cohn School location in Sylvan Park, Wright Middle School off Nolensville Road, Inglewood Elementary in East Nashville, Antioch Middle School, as well as several other partner locations.
Offerings include cooking classes (Table for Two and Vietnamese Spring Rolls), language classes (Spanish, American Sign Language, German, French and Mandarin Chinese), lots of music options (Music City Songwriters, Beginning Singing, Singing with Vocal Technique and Violin Refresher), Know Your Rights, Eating for a Better Night’s Sleep, Couponing Basics and Create a Rug from Old T-shirts.

FiftyForward classes
FiftyForward offers an impressive list of classes (bridge, tai chi, Zumba, music, book and writers groups, watercolor, dancing, lapidary, silversmithing, creative arts, knitting, etc.) in various locations for members, with prices ranging from $5 to $75.

Parthenon Symposia
