You know a great thriller when you see it – or rather, feel it. When done right, a thriller provokes a more visceral response than just about any other kind of movie. Your palms get sweaty. A pit opens in your stomach. You grind the enamel off your teeth. Is your heart pumping and your leg shaking uncontrollably? Good. That means the movie you’re watching is doing its job.

Exactly how a thriller initiates those reactions, however, varies greatly. The genre’s pantheon of greats includes political intrigue, manipulation, gaslighting, and, of course, lots and lots of crime, up to and including murder. But as a category of movie, the thriller is also loosely defined. You’ll find examples of science fiction, horror, heists, action, even comedy.
